Water passes through by surface tension and gravity; debris stays on top where wind and rain can move it off.
Stainless matters for the mesh itself. Plastic screens become brittle under UV exposure and sag in the middle; aluminum mesh dents and deforms. A stainless mesh holds its shape and does not corrode where it contacts the aluminum gutter.
Foam inserts and brush-style products are a different category. They fill the trough rather than covering it, and in a pine-heavy environment they trap needles and organic material inside the gutter, which is the opposite of the goal.
An honest answer about maintenance
No gutter guard eliminates maintenance permanently, and any company promising that is overselling. What a well-installed micro-mesh system does is change the nature of the work: instead of scooping wet, rotting debris out of the trough from a ladder, you are occasionally rinsing or brushing dry material off the top surface — and in many cases rain handles that on its own.
How often anything is needed depends on real conditions: how many trees overhang the roof and what species they are, roof pitch (steeper roofs shed debris off the guard more readily), shingle age and granule loss, whether the property sits in a wind-sheltered pocket where debris settles, and the specific guard installed. A shaded lot under mature pines will always need more attention than an open lot in a newer subdivision.
Guards on existing gutters, or with a new system
Guards can be added to existing gutters when the gutters are structurally sound — properly pitched, securely hung, not corroded, and the right size for the roof. We check that first, because installing protection over a system that is already failing just hides the problem. If the existing gutters are undersized or sagging, the better path is new seamless gutters with guards installed at the same time.
